The University of Latvia as an academic institution with a long history of research and education this year has launched a realization of an ambitious that will change the collaboration of studies and field science. The Science center in Torņakalns will unite various buildings and a landscaped territory, aiming at a European level study campus. In the first layer it is intended to build a Natural Sciences Academic Center (Nature House), where will be located the Faculties of Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Earth Sciences and Medicine, as well as the Institute of Microbiology and Biotechnology, and the Institute of Chemical Physics. In the building there will be introduced 6 research center laboratories of national importance. Before the the start of construction, archaeological excavations needed to be carried out, they began in late 2013, but in May 2014, the foundation stone of the new building was built into. In October 28, 2014 rafter celebration of the UL future Natural Sciences Academic Center took place. The Nature House has a compact free-standing form with 2 communication nodes and equivalent facades. On of the tasks was to create a recognizable first layer of the campus - a building that would serve as a trademark of the place. An important component of the building should be considered the innovative technologies - a double facade of the building, created
from green plants, which will reduce temperature fluctuations in sunlight, as well as the green roof, coated in succulent plantings. For the first time in the history of Latvian, planning principles of academic buildings have been changed, avoiding accented divisions - classrooms and faculty offices, but opening the planning and, at the same time, offering the possibility to join together in small groups and lead workshops.
